I’d say that there are several factors involved if you plan to become an unstoppable real estate agent. But, the most basic one–the one that you need despite all others—is discipline, self-discipline. By discipline, I’m referring to showing up regularly and getting things done, despite the temptations surrounding you. You know… it is like a diet in the new year. In order to stick with it, you need some self-discipline.
Here are 7 tips for maintaining self-discipline in real estate, which should assist you in becoming an unstoppable real estate agent.
Understand Your Weaknesses
First and foremost, you need to understand your weaknesses. You might know what your strengths are, but if you don’t know your weaknesses, you won’t be able to direct your efforts correctly. You need to get rid of your weaknesses, or find a way to transform them into something positive. As an example, if you stink at door knocking, find a way to either eliminate it or transform your process so that it works for you.
Create a Plan and Follow It
The second thing you should do is create a plan and follow it. But first, you will need to set yourself achievable goals that will motivate your plan of action. If you did anything in December, you probably updated your business plan for 2022. Follow this plan to the letter. Just like “The Little Engine that Could”, slowly plug forward and you will see success.
Improve Your Willpower and Self-Discipline
Now, once you have a plan ready, you will need to improve your willpower and in turn, your self-discipline. Even if you didn’t set willpower improvement as one of your aims, you need to realize that it is one of the most important steps on your way to better self-discipline. According to a study I heard about a long time ago on “60 Minutes” it takes 11 presentations of vegetables on a child’s plate, before they will be consumed. Applying that to self-discipline, try something a minimum of 11 days in a row to see if you can develop a habit which will become second nature.
Get Rid of Temptations and Distractions
Temptations and distractions will not only reduce your productivity, but they will also make your road to self-discipline much harder. This is why you want to get rid of all the possible temptations and distractions that could potentially prevent you from reaching your aim as quickly as possible. For example, do not get yourself into a situation where you are constantly eating out or going out for drinks with fellow agents when you have not completed your daily tasks yet.
Keep Your Habits Consistent
One of the easiest ways to lose your direction is by doing everything sporadically. Even if you have a clear goal in mind, you might find it difficult to work towards it if you are not organized enough. This is why you need to develop habits in yourself and keep them consistent by sticking to them no matter what.
In fact, you could even set up a daily, weekly, or monthly plan for yourself detailing what you will be doing and when (at what time and how often).
Reward Yourself for Your Achievements
Though being self-disciplined is all about being stricter with yourself, it’s important that you take a step back sometimes and give yourself a break. Moreover, when you have an achievement worth celebrating, don’t hesitate to reward yourself for the milestone you have reached. I know an agent who said that if she closed a certain number of transactions in a year, she was going to buy herself a hand-tailored suit. And, she did!
Forgive Yourself and Learn from Mistakes
Last but not least, you should always remember that nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. But this doesn’t mean that you need to worry about these mistakes at all times. Instead, you need to find a way to forgive yourself and learn from the mistakes you have made in the past. Simply put: pick yourself up off the floor and try again tomorrow.
