This is my third post in a series about reinventing yourself—a series that was prompted by an interesting discussion that I had with a friend of mine several weeks ago. (You can read about that discussion in Post 1: Career Makeover for 2011.)
Since Southern California (Palm Springs, Beverly Hills, the O.C.) is famed for its exploits in the field of cosmetic surgery, why not give your career a little face-lift? Trust me; this will be painless and a lot cheaper than plastic surgery.
First off, you may want to read the previous posts in the series: Career Makeover for 2011 and Nip and Tuck in 2011. Once you have done that and worked through the exercises discussed in those posts, it is time to move on to what I describe here.
(Sidebar: Everyone hates homework. I know. I have two kids of my own and I used to be a teacher. But, when it comes to my career, I need to tell you that the best thing I ever did was spend 40 hours writing a business plan a few years back. When you force yourself to write something down, you begin to think about it differently and you spend more time thinking about it. So, if you are serious about your career and making some changes, why not actually try to do this? Don’t just go through the moves.)
Identify Your Strengths Think about your strengths and how you can use your strengths to achieve your goals. As an example, my husband is a wonderful people person. He is also a great salesman, but is not interested in any of the details. Since he sets really high closing goals for himself, he has decided that it is best for him to be out in the field—putting the deals together. Several years ago, he hired a great licensed office assistant to take care of all of the details.
Look for a Role Model Is there anyone in your local area or that you have identified that you want to emulate? If there is a local Realtor® who you look up to, why not talk with them and ask them some questions about how they approach certain activities? For me, when I started blogging, I did not have any experience in that field. While I didn’t call any specific blogger to ask questions, I did spend time studying the blogs of successful real estate bloggers in order to see what aspects of their blogs might be nice to emulate.
The real estate field is moving very quickly. With the use of the Internet, changes are made to how we do things almost each and every day. Also, new industry policies and economic issues directly effect how we conduct business. Because of all these frequently changes, the real estate career nip and tuck may need to occur more than your average face-lift. But, then Joan Rivers has had quite a few face-lifts, so maybe that’s okay.
